In the post Writing for Hypotheses in Org-mode, I described how much better blogging becomes once you can directly post from your Emacs. This is a long overdue update.
Because, unfortunately, Hypotheses.org shortly afterwards silently blocked the remote editing feature of their WordPress installation. This makes it impossible to use org2blog, but also other clients, such as the official WordPress app—which is still described in a post on Bloghaus. But not only is it impossible to use remote editing on Hypotheses.org, but any attempt to do so will lock the source IP address out of Hypotheses.org for hours.
I assume security considerations motivated this change, but it is still a pretty draconian measure. So we are back to copy and paste. I sincerely appreciate the free service offered by Hypotheses.org, but since I am increasingly irritated by the unnecessary work this creates, I have been wondering whether I should move the blog elsewhere.
One thing that has been discouraging me from doing so was that I would have to change the data associated with the ISSN of this blog (2364-9992, in case you’re wondering). According to the FAQ of the National ISSN Centre for Germany, “[o]nce a blog has been assigned an ISSN, it is listed in the catalogue of the German National Library and in the international ISSN portal. This renders the blog quotable.” Sounds great, but actually I have been unable to find the the record in either place (in fact, you cannot even search for ISSNs on the International ISSN Portal). However, googling for the ISSN found an entry on ROAD, the Directory of Open Access scholarly Resources, a service offered by the ISSN International Centre with the support of the Communication and Information Sector of UNESCO. Cool!
But then I noticed:
Other title: Neuro-linguistic programming for historical texts
Umm, no. NLP for Historical Texts is not a short title, it is the only title. But what is worse, “NLP” as used in this blog stands for “natural language processing,” not for “neuro-linguistic programming.” So someone (or something) apparently decided that (a) this blog needed another title and that (b) “NLP” must stand for the well-known pseudoscience. Frankly, if this is all what an ISSN gives me, than I would rather not have one.
So, I think I will move this blog to another site. If I can get the ISSN record corrected, I can also get it updated with a new URL. If not, I will not miss it.
